 what i was looking at in this painting, what was imposing in my vision: the red of the canadian flag, the oval yellow sign, the big pine tree, marks in snow from cars tracks, the twisted elm on the left, the wires in the sky. for me, these elements were arresting but i struggled with them, was unsure how to paint them, how to incorporate them into the painting as color, stucture, as shape, texture. 
i put the canadian flag in and took it out about a dozen times. i loved the red of it, but everytime i had it in the painting it dominated the entire piece...took over like dictator, controlled the entire image.
