arthur dove, an american artist from the early part of the 20th century wrote:

"i would like to make something that is real in itself,  that does not remind anyone of any other thing, and that does not have to be explained like the letter A, for instance."

 in 1982,  when i was a young artist in the master's program at york university,  i wrote the following:

"i want my paintings to exist as paintings;
not as an illusion of something
we have seen before;
i want my paintings to not have to be explained with language."
