lang is a whistle-stop of a hamlet on the outskirts of crows nest pass. in a small house on the edge of lang lived a peculiar, mystifying woman. she never married, never had kids, no-one even knew how she got there, just always seemed to have been, never seemed to have aged. she had a graceful, ethereal face, unusual, refreshing, complex, beautiful. always wore noticeable caps, hats, always had feathers in her hair, intriguing necklaces, beads. she kept cats, dogs, goats, chickens, a horse, fruit trees, a vegetable and herb garden. she never went far from her house, was never seen in the village yet everyone knew of her, had a story to tell about her. the story that most people knew was of a sign that appeared on a large old oak tree in the middle of the village after a full-moon, thunderous, lightening filled night. it was a message, cryptic, prophetic, everyone in lang conjectured, suspicioned, agreed that it was posted by this peculiar, mystifying woman.
the sign read:
if you believe that language is a channel to understanding this world then language is a barrier.
if you believe that language is a barrier to understanding this world then language is a channel.
