when i passed her in the doorway the atoms of time split in two, half day, half night, moon up ahead, sun down below.  she was expelling her breath, charging the ions, creating a magnet of hallucinations. it was an appealing sight. those who witnessed her were instantly attracted,  tongues frozen stuck on steel,  flies on fly paper. she warned them with a glance,  a startlingly silent crack of a whip.  their attention made her spine soften, filled her eyes with baby oil, her voice with candle wax.  at one point she looked up, saw 3 birds circling overhead,  invited them down, unbuttoned her blouse and held her open palms around the pumping blood of her breast. the birds understood her calling,  gathered around her in a circle, opened their wings creating for her a warm and soft feathered teepee. here she could blow on her embers, turn herself into fire, be a spiraling blue wisp of smoke, here she could sleep and dream away her dream.
